VP Jusuf Kalla calls on miners to reclaim ex-mining sites

Vice President Jusuf Kalla calls on miners to reclaim ex-mining sites immediately after completing their mining activities.

VP Jusuf Kalla made the call following floods that hit certain areas, such as in Konawe, Southeast Sulawesi and Samarinda in East Kalimantan in recent years.

Environmental problems in former mining sites across the country were in the spotlight after the issue was raised during the recent presidential election. 

He regretted environmental damage caused by mining activities.

"As for the mining sites, regardless they obtain permits or not, after it becomes an ex-mine, reclamation has to be undertaken immediately. That is the mandate of the law," VP Jusuf Kalla said.

He said the mechanism to deal with the ex-mining sites has been regulated by the law. Unfortunately, many regional governments do not monitor closely the mining activities, in during the particular post-mining activities..
