Prominent independent environmental watchdog Walhi is seeking public support to push the government to review the mining contract of giant gold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia, according to the Bisnis Indonesia daily.

The paper reported on Tuesday that Walhi had distributed some 20,000 postcards to 24 major cities to seek the support.

Walhi official Longgena Ginting said that the public support would be provided to the government to review the contract of Freeport.

"The impact from Freeport activity is extensive," he said.

Freeport has been under serious attack over alleged environmental destruction, collusion and corruption, and negligence to the local West Papua people. (*)
