Wasco Greenergy seeks clearer Indonesian rules before scaling biomass systems

Malaysia’s renewable-energy machinery supplier Wasco Greenergy Bhd said it needs clearer regulations in Indonesia before making major investments in biomass steam-energy systems, as the company plans to expand in the world’s largest palm-oil-producing country, according to a report by theedgemalaysia.com.

Indonesia accounted for 49% of Wasco Greenergy’s revenue in the financial year ended Dec. 31, 2024.

Following its listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia, the company plans to grow operations in Indonesia by opening a sales office in Jakarta and two new service centres in Pekanbaru and Sulawesi. The expansion will involve leasing and upgrading facilities, acquiring equipment, hiring local staff, and deploying service and logistics vehicles.

Chief Executive Officer Lee Yee Chong said the Indonesian government supports biomass energy, including biodiesel use and plantation expansion, but the company seeks clearer regulatory guidance to solidify its investments.

“Biomass energy is highly relevant to Malaysia and Indonesia, as these industries require steam and generate abundant agricultural waste that can be converted into renewable energy,” Lee said.

He noted that Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel program will increase palm oil demand, while authorities plan to open an additional 600,000 hectares of land for palm oil use.

In Malaysia, the company’s second-largest market, biomass energy has historically been underdeveloped. However, Lee said this is expected to change with new renewable-energy programmes, including 300 MW under the Feed-in-Tariff scheme next year, with 150 MW allocated to biomass.

Lee highlighted Wasco Greenergy’s competitive edge: “Compared with peers like BM GreenTech Bhd, our advantage is that we provide a full suite of equipment—from biomass processing systems to power-generation boilers and turbines. We have the technical depth to support both the palm oil sector and other industries aiming to decarbonise.”

Wasco Greenergy specialises in engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of renewable-energy systems, mainly biomass steam-energy and Shinko steam turbine generator systems. The company also provides after-sales services targeting the palm oil milling sector and other agricultural industries, aiming to convert agricultural waste into renewable energy and reduce fossil fuel reliance.

Lee added, “In Malaysia, demand is rising not only from palm oil mills but also from general industries seeking to replace fossil fuels with biomass technologies. Overall, our renewable-energy markets will be roughly split 50:50 between Malaysia and Indonesia, with the remainder coming from Latin America and Africa.”

Currently, the company has 31 ongoing steam-energy system projects with design capacities ranging from 4.5 to 90 tonnes per hour, along with 81 active orders for steam turbine generator systems ranging from 0.5 MW to 3.5 MW.
