Uranium deposits have been found in at least 15 locations in West Kalimantan, mostly in sites near the Kalan river, Ella Hilir district in Singtang regency, according to a local legislator.

Yuranius Buana, a member of the provincincal legislative council, said last week that the uranium deposits were discovered by an exploration team of the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan) and its French counterpart in 1968.

He, however, said that no follow-ups had been taken since the findings were made. Yuranius said he had consulted with Batan and other related government offices in Jakarta about the matter and asked them to explain the possible impact of the uranium deposits to the local residents. (*)
