West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno claimed that the province has the potential to generate 1,600 MW of electricity from geothermal.

It's about four times bigger than the province's power need of around 400 MW, Irwan said.

"West Sumatra is not in power shortage. The geothermal resource could help electricity shortage in Medan and North Sumatra," Irwan told petromindo.com.

He was speaking to petromindo.com following his province's agreement with the Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry on the development of renewable energy potentials in the province.

Under the deal, the Ministry will help support capacity building efforts of staff at the provincial office.

The regional government meanwhile will prepare a number of locations for renewable energy development and facilitate all the licensing requirements. It will also team up with the Ministry?s team to carry out feasibility study.
