IDX-listed Marine service provider PT Wintermar Offshore Marine Tbk (WOM) announced on Tuesday that its subsidiary PT Wintermar has been reinstated to be able to bid for tenders by PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Java (PHE ONWJ), following the expiry of the one year sanction against PT Wintermar by PHE ONWJ following the vessel incident in 2013.
As was announced in the firm?s newsletter #29 last year dated June 11, 2013, owing to a vessel incident involving the fatality of a fisherman, PHE ONWJ, in accordance with prescribed regulations under PTK 007, had imposed a sanction against PT Wintermar which caused the company to be excluded from participating directly in tenders for a period of 1 year from April 15, 2013 to April 14, 2014.
After a review, PHE ONWJ is satisfied with the actions taken by PT Wintermar in accordance with WOM?s follow up plan to prevent any future incidents. PHE ONWJ has officially lifted the ban as per their letter no.223/IV/PHEONWJ/PSCM/PS&S/2014, with effect 15 April 2014, the firm said in a statement.
As the firm had outlined in its newsletter last year, WOM management took the vessel incident very seriously. In accordance with the company?s risk assessment and safety procedures, a follow up action plan was drawn up. During the year management implemented several actions to tighten our supervision of the Quality, Health, Safety and Environment function, including a restructuring of the reporting lines, a review of the procedures, changing the department head and recruitment of new and experienced sea farers into senior positions in the company.
In addition to internal improvements, WOM also reached out to the fishing village in Karawang where the affected fishermen live, by adopting them as our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Project.
?In this regard, we have conducted a briefing in the village about safety precautions at sea, particularly highlighting safety awareness while operating in vicinity of drilling operations, in addition to donating safety equipment such as life vests and radar reflectors to enable their wooden fishing vessels to be visible to ship radars.
?In response to their request, we have helped them build an early childhood learning centre for the village, donated a library and computer equipment, and also conducted storytelling and parenting talks to promote awareness about the importance of early childhood education. We are glad that we were able to bring some good out of the unfortunate incident and will continue to work together with the village in this year with an environmental project in the pipeline,? the company said.
