Workers in East Kalimantan mining, oil sectors demand higher salary

At least some 49,000 employees working in East Kalimantan coal and gold mining firms, and in oil and gas firms are fighting for a higher minimum wage level, the local Kaltim Post daily reported Monday.

The paper said that the local SPKEP labor union, which focuses on labor issued in mining, chemical and energy sectors, has represented the workers.

The paper quoted SPKEP team head Andi Muchtar as saying that the union was currently in negotiation with the association of 12 companies.

He said that SPKEP demanded minimum wage of Rp 910,000 per month, which is down from its initial demand of Rp 937,000 level, while the association insisted on Rp 535,000.(*)
