Saturday, January 12 2002 - 03:07 AM WIB

At least 550 working accidents occurred in Riau-based PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) in 2001. About 200 of the accidents took place in industrial activities and the remaining 350 involved traffic accidents, Riau Post reported on Saturday.

Yanto Sianipar, the manager of the oil company?s health, environment and safety (HES) department, said that five workers were killed in the accidents.

He said that the high rate of the working accidents were due to the high risk of the company?s activities especially in the exploration and production, which involved heavy equipment and high technology.

?Besides, the number of workers which reach over 30,000 is also the factor of the high rate of the working accidents,? he said.(*)
