Youth group demands Arutmin to pay land compensation

A youth group linked to President Abdurrahman Wahid called Banser "attacked" on Wednesday the office of coal mining firm PT Arutmin in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, demanding the company to pay compensation for the land in the Senakin village it acquired in the past.

The local Suara Kaltim daily reported that the youth group, claiming to represent the villagers, was accompanied by lawyer Djunaidi.

Company spokesman Badrun met with Djunaidi to negotiate, while members of the youth group waited peacefully in the ground floor lobby of the BRI Tower in Balikpapan.

Badrun later said that the protesters should have asked the local National Land Agency or BPN for the compensation. He said that the land acquisition was settled together with BPN years ago.

The paper didn't say what was the conclusion of the meeting between Arutmin and the youth group. (*)
