Around 50 people from the Sriwijaya Youth Council organization visited the South Sumatra provincial legislative council on Wednesday to protest the installation of the new board of directors of the state-owned coal mining giant PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam, the local Sriwijaya Post daily reported.
The paper quoted the protesters as saying that most of the the new board of directors had little knowledge about the condition of the province because they come from outside South Sumatra.
Bukit Asam is based in South Sumatra.
The protesters demanded the local legislative council to fight for the aspiration of the local people.
The government recently reshuffled the top management of Bukit Asam. Ismet Harmaini, a former executive of the West Sumatra-based cement maker PT Semen Padang, was appointed as the new president. Several other company directors were also recruited from Semen Padang.(*)
