In 2023, the utilization of geothermal reached 2,348.3 MW and put the country in second place in the world after the United States (3,962 MW) in utilizing geothermal power.
The development of geothermal energy, which is a clean and renewable resource, is important to Indonesia as the country has pledged its commitment to an unconditional emissions reduction of 29 percent by 2030 relative to its business-as-usual (BAU) case and up to a 41 percent reduction with international assistance. The total capacity of geothermal power plants is targeted to reach around 8 GW by 2030, according to the 2020-2030 geothermal development roadmap.
