Hundreds of workers of the contractors of liquefied natural gas producer PT Badak NGL in Bontang, East Kalimantan, staged a rally to demand a higher salary, the local Kaltim Post daily reported on Tuesday.

The paper said that the protesting workers demanded the contractors to pay salary at least equal to the provincial minimum wage of Rp 435,000 per month (US$1=Rp 11,100).

The paper said that the rally was organized by the SBSI labor union.

After four hours of demonstration, which was tightly guarded by the local police, the representatives of the protesting employees met with top officials of Badak NGL's contractors.

The contractors then agreed to increase the salary to the minimum wage level, and to be effective starting this month's salary payment.(*)
