Fire at Dumai refinery quickly handled, operations unaffected

PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional has confirmed that the fire which broke out at its Dumai refinery on Wednesday evening was successfully brought under control by late night, with no reported casualties.
According to the company’s official statement released early Thursday, the incident occurred in one of the operational units of the refinery and was swiftly contained by the facility’s emergency response team. The situation was declared safe and under control by 11:20 p.m. local time.
“As soon as the incident was detected, our emergency team took prompt action in accordance with safety protocols,” said Agustiawan, Area Manager of Communication, Relations, and CSR at the Dumai Refinery. “The quick response prevented the fire from spreading to other areas.”
Initial reports from Wednesday night indicated loud explosions and a fire at the facility around 9:00 p.m., leading to concern among local residents and a temporary evacuation of nearby areas. Ten fire trucks were deployed to the site, including eight from Pertamina, one from the Dumai municipal fire department, and one from Pertamina Patra Niaga Region Sumbagut.

The company emphasized that environmental monitoring and coordination with local authorities and government agencies were carried out continuously throughout the emergency. “As a mitigation step, we secured the affected area to eliminate further risks,” added Agustiawan.
Despite the incident, the refinery’s main operations remain safe, and community activities around the area were reported to be unaffected. An internal investigation is now underway to determine the root cause and to strengthen preventive measures going forward.
The Dumai refinery, with a capacity of 170,000 barrels per day, is Indonesia’s third-largest and produces various fuels including diesel, aviation fuel, and green coke.
