Indonesia and the United States advanced cooperation in energy and mining during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Washington, D.C., where Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia joined bilateral talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ahead of the leaders’ meeting, Indonesian and U.S. companies signed trade and investment agreements worth more than $7 billion, including several energy and resource related deals, according to the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council.

The agreements included a memorandum of understanding between mining company Freeport McMoRan and Indonesia’s investment ministry to cooperate on critical minerals, as well as a partnership between oil, gas firm PT Pertamina (Perero) and Halliburton Co focused on enhancing oilfield recovery.

The energy ministry said Bahlil’s participation in the visit formed part of Indonesia’s broader energy diplomacy aimed at strengthening national energy security, encouraging downstream industrial development and opening opportunities for investment and technology collaboration.

During the bilateral discussions, officials exchanged views on potential cooperation in the energy and mineral sectors, with Indonesia emphasizing that future partnerships should support domestic capacity building and long term energy resilience.

The ministry added that Indonesia’s diplomatic efforts are intended to strengthen industrial competitiveness and support the country’s target of achieving net zero emissions by 2060.
