KPC, Arutmin coal output down, Berau up in Q1 2011

UK-based Vallar PLC reported Thursday that East Kalimantan-based PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) produced 8.2 million tons of coal in the first quarter of 2011, a decrease of 9.2 percent from the first quarter of 2010, due to higher than anticipated rainfall.

?Because of lower coal being mined the sales volume for the quarter was 9.1 million tons, a decrease of 6.0 percent from the first quarter of 2010, but this was offset by a higher average sales price of $92.78 per ton, an increase of 41.9 percent over the first quarter of 2010,? Vallar said in its Interim Management Statement to the London Stock Exchange.

Vallar also reported that South Kalimantan-based PT Arutmin Indonesia produced 6.0 million tons in the first quarter of 2011, a small decrease of 0.5 percent from the first quarter of 2010. Overburden removal was up 37 percent on the first quarter of 2010, but production was marginally below plan due to higher than anticipated rainfall.

Due to road haulage delays at Arutmin?s Batulicin mine, sales volume for the quarter was 4.8 million tons, a decrease of 22.6 percent from the first quarter of 2010, but this was offset by a higher average sales price of $77.10 per ton, an increase of 31.6 percent over the first quarter of 2010, Vallar said.

Vallar also said that East Kalimantan-based PT Berau Coal produced 4.1 million tons of coal in the first quarter of 2011, an increase of 9 percent from the first quarter of 2010. Overburden removal was up33.3 percent on the first quarter of 2010.

Berau?s, sales volume for the quarter was 4.6 million tons an increase of 16.4 percent from the first quarter of 2010, and average sales price was $74.32 per ton, an increase of 31.7 percent over the first quarter of 2010, Vallar added.

According to the statement, KPC and Arutmin are currently expecting to produce 66.0 million tons in 2011, up from 60.4 million tons in 2010. Meanwhile, Berau is expected to produce 20.4 million tons in 2011, compared with 17.4 million tons in 2010.

Vallar owns a 25 percent stake in associate PT Bumi Resources Tbk, a holding company that owns 65 percent of KPC and 70 percent of Arutmin. Vallar also holds a 75 percent stake in subsidiary PT Berau Coal Energy Tbk, a holding company that owns 90 percent of Berau. (robert)
