Regional Hydrogen: Sembcorp, partners team up with NYK to transport green ammonia

Singapore firm Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) announced on Wednesday that its subsidiary Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte. Ltd , together with Kyushu Electric Power Co. Inc and Sojitz Corporation have appointed Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) as a shipping partner for the proposed export of green ammonia from India to Japan.
The four parties signed a Heads of Terms (HoT) in relation to a cross-border green ammonia supply from India to Japan. Under the HoT, NYK will oversee the maritime transportation of the green ammonia, to establish a robust supply chain from production in India to supply in Japan, particularly in the Kyushu region.

Sembcorp, as the lead developer of the Proposed Project, will leverage its strong capabilities demonstrated through its existing renewables portfolio of 4.7GW in India, to produce competitively priced green ammonia in India. Sembcorp will utilise renewable energy to produce an initial 200,000 metric tonnes per annum of green ammonia in India.
The front-end engineering and design work for the green ammonia plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, has commenced, Sembcorp said.
