Internet services provider PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (SURGE) (IDX: WIFI) and PT Huawei Tech Investment have officially launched the world’s first commercial 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) network operating in the 1.4GHz spectrum band.

The launch was announced at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona following the commercial rollout of the IRA – Internet Rakyat broadband service on Feb. 19 through SURGE subsidiary PT Telemedia Komunikasi Pratama.

The service offers fixed broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps at a monthly price of Rp100,000, or roughly $6, with unlimited data and free modem rental.

The network uses 80 MHz of contiguous spectrum in the 1.4GHz band and is expected to be deployed across more than 5,000 sites, targeting Indonesia’s Region 1 areas including Java, Maluku and Papua. The rollout is aimed at serving an addressable market of more than 45 million households.

Under the partnership, Huawei will provide end to end technology solutions including radio access network infrastructure, core network systems, customer premises equipment, project management and managed services.

SURGE director Shannedy Ong said the initiative is designed to accelerate affordable broadband access across Indonesia by expanding last mile connectivity without the need for extensive fiber deployment.

Huawei Smart Rail business unit chief executive Raymond Zuo said the collaboration supports the development of the 1.4GHz ecosystem and will help expand fixed broadband coverage while promoting digital inclusion.

The companies said the project aims to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure and support broader national digital transformation efforts.
