The Martabe Gold Mine, located in South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, operates across 646.08 hectares as of December 2024. Since production began on 24 July 2012, the mine has processed over 6 million tonnes of ore annually, producing more than 200,000 ounces of gold and 1–2 million ounces of silver annually.
The Martabe Gold Mine operates under a 30-year Contract of Work (CoW) with the Indonesian Government. Initially spanning 6,560 km² in 1997, the concession area has been refined to 130,252 hectares (1,303 km²), encompassing South Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, North Tapanuli and Mandailing Natal Regencies.
As of June 2024, the mine’s mineral resources were estimated at 6.1 million ounces of gold and 59 million ounces of silver, while ore reserves were calculated at 3.2 million ounces of gold and 32 million ounces of silver.
The Martabe Gold Mine is currently seeking a qualified professional to join our MPDSE Department Team, supporting the enhancement of departmental capabilities and the achievement of strategic objectives.
SENIOR ENGINEER – GEOTECHNICAL TAILINGS STUDY

This position will be based at the Martabe Gold Mine Site within the MPDSE Department and will report directly to the Manager – Study & Development.
The Senior Engineer – Geotechnical Tailings Study will support the Superintendent Mining Studies (Tailings and Waste) in the development of various tailings and waste management projects, with a primary focus on geotechnical aspects. These projects are at varying stages, ranging from conceptual and pre-feasibility (PFS) to feasibility study (FS) levels. Current key initiatives include the Additional Tailings Facility (ATF) project, South Dump, Limestone Quarry, Kapur Development, and a Sulphide Study.
The ATF project currently under review includes:
• Option 1: TSF Upstream
• Option 2: In-Pit Disposal
• Option 3: TSF Downstream
• Option 6: TSF with Vacuum Pre-loading
This position will responsible for several scope as follows:
• Lead geotechnical field investigations including drilling, piezocone penetration testing (CPTu), in-situ strength and permeability assessments, installation of piezometers (both standpipe and vibrating wire piezometers/VWPs), and laboratory testing for various tailings and waste-related studies.
• Oversee field trials and related field activities, ensuring compliance with established technical standards.
• Conduct geotechnical assessments for the development of tailings and waste facilities and provide critical evaluations and reviews of consultant reports.
• Collaborate with national and international consultants in advancing tailings and waste facility studies and designs.
• Work closely with internal stakeholders to align project goals and ensure cohesive execution across departments.
Candidates for this position are expected to meet the following qualifications and criteria:
1. Bachelor’s degree (S1) in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Mining Engineering with a strong background in Geotechnical Engineering. A Master’s degree is preferred.
2. Professional Certification: Preferably certified as a technical expert (e.g., IPP/IPM from PII, Geotechnical Expert HATTI G0/G1, or other relevant certifications).
3. Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the geotechnical field.
4. Knowledgeable in mining operations, earthworks, and geotechnical drilling; experience in gold mining is an advantage.
5. Proficient in interpreting subsurface conditions based on drilling data and surface mapping.
6. Skilled in using geotechnical modeling software such as Rocscience Slide/RS2, Plaxis, and design tools like AutoCAD and Surpac.
7. Strong command of English in listening, speaking, and writing.
8. Preferred understanding of laboratory testing for the physical and mechanical properties of soil and rock.
9. Preferred experience in using instrumentation for slope performance monitoring, including InSAR satellite, radar, RTS, inclinometer, and piezometer.
10. Familiarity with waste and tailings management is an advantage.
