Mining projects worth Rp 84.7 trillion to begin next year

Five mining projects worth Rp 84.7 trillion (US$8.97 billion) as part of the master plan for the acceleration of the economic growth (MP3EI) 2011-2025 will be commenced in 2013, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

Also as part of the MP3EI long-term economic plan, other five mining projects worth Rp186.13 trillion will be commenced this year and other eight mining projects have been started since 2010 and 2011.

Meanwhile, other 10 mining projects worth Rp 172.06 trillion in the Sumatera economic corridor are under preparation but no construction schedules have been made.

Tatang Sabaruddin, the director for program development at the director general of coal and mineral, said as quoted by Investor Daily that the five projects whose construction would be commenced in 2013 included gold mining projects worth Rp 40 trillion to be developed by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) in Sumbawa and a mangaanese smelting project worth Rp 2 trillion to be developed by PT AGB in Kupang.

They also included the Rp 16 trillion ferronickel smelting plant of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, nickel mining projects worth Rp 2.2 trillion of PT Vale Idonesia, and the Rp 4.5 trillion coal transportation infrastructure to be developed by MEC Coal.

Meanwhile, the five projects whose construction will be commenced this year included the mine-mouth coal fired power plant with a capacity of 1,400 MW to be built by MEC-Nalco at total costs of about Rp 135 billion, the PLTU AsamAsam coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 2 x 65 MW worth Rp 1.40 trillion owned by PLN, and underground mining projects worth Rp 150 trillion of PT Freeport Indonesia in Papua, and ferronickel projects to be developed by PT Aquila in Halmahera.(*)
