Wednesday, November 2 2011 - 06:56 AM WIB

Mineral and Energy Resources Minister Jero Wacik called on mining firms including coal miners operating in Indonesia to prioritize the use of home-made products rather than importing them to help drive the growth of local business and industries.

The statement was made at a two-day seminar and exhibition of the domestic products supporting mining sector.

?As long as the products to support mining sector have been produced locally, please use them instead of importing,? he said.

He also asked the mining companies to hire more local experts and employees to work in the mining companies.

Article 106 of the 2009 mining and coal law requires miners to use locally-made products and services as well as to employ local workers.

Data from the ministry for 2010 shows that out of total US$2.7 billion worth of products used by mining sector only $1.2 billion worth were of home-made products. (adianto)
