Chinese diversified business group Ningxia Hengshun Group is considering building a $7 billion nickel smelter in Indonesia, the Jakarta Globe reported.
Himawan Hariyoga, the deputy for investment planning at the Investment Coordination Board (BKPM), said that the Chinese company was studying the possibility of constructing the smelter, the first phase of which would involve an investment of $1.3 billion.
He said no specific location had been selected, but ?from our side, we want they [build] it in Indonesia?s Master Plan of Economic Development (MP3EI) area,? Himawan said.
The government has identified six regions as economic corridors, with parts of eastern Indonesia, specifically Kalimantan and Sulawesi, seeing a focus on the mining and energy industries. (*)
