Monday, October 17 2011 - 07:27 AM WIB

PT Freeport Indonesia halted its mineral concentrate production from today after its pipe to deliver concentrate to port was cut off as workers demonstration is getting intense.

?There was sabotage. The pipe has been cut. Starting from this morning, we halted mineral concentrate production as it is no longer safe,? an employee of Freeport, Nurhadi, was quoted by detik.com as saying.

A director of Freeport, Sinta Sirait, said initially Freeport continued to produce concentrate despite workers staged demonstration for one month. However, the production was cut to 180,000 tons per day, down from normal level of 230,000 tons per day.

President Director and Chief Executive Officer of PT Freeport Indonesia, Armando Mahler, has said that Freeport suffered losses of US$20 million per day due to the workers? strike, which forces the company to produce at lower capacity. (*)
